A method for determining a compression ratio for compressing a digital data stream, whereby the data stream is sub-divided into blocks of data each of which is encoded. The method comprises the step of encoding a block of data 310 to a data file using a default compression-ratio 305. The method further comprises the steps of determining a level of compression needed to produce an image relating to a particular image size based on the step of encoding and encoding a block of data using the determined level of compression. In this manner, by determining a level of compression needed to produce an image of a particular image size, it is possible for an image quality to be manipulated to fit a given image size range, rather than a memory element dictating a range of image sizes to be used to store images. |
