The lift or hoist has guide rails (11) for a load carrier (10), and the load cable (12) is guided by a winder (14) driven by an electric motor (13) over a guide roller on the head piece of a first upper guide section (4). With the motor-driven cable winder a second return winder (16) can be selectively coupled via a gear, and from which a cable (19) runs to the load carrier to which it is fixed.
