The invention relates to a method of producing, from drawn glass tube containers free from fragments of glass. The tube, as drawn, is cut into lengths and both ends of each length are sealed to keep the interior clean, one end of each length being opened before making containers from it. As shown, the lengths 2, Fig. 2, severed mechanically, are supported on rollers 9, 10, 11 and located against a stop 15 by a roller 14 while heated by a flame 12 until a roller 13 removes the end portion 3, which may contain fragments, and seal the end of the remainder which is moved against a stop to flatten the sealed end. The opposite end is then similarly treated, the tube being heated along its length to produce internal pressure and prevent this sealed and collapsing inwards as a result of reduction of internal pressure due to cooling. Alternatively, the original tube can be severed by melting to produce lengths with smooth ends free from fragments, one or both ends being open and subsequently sealed. The end sealing may be effected in the machine shown in Fig. 8, wherein the tubes 2 from a magazine 21 are fed by a chain 22 to the rollers 9, 10, 11 below, each tube being lifted to feed it to the next pair of rollers by lifting a bar 24. One end of end tube is sealed in the portion 26 of the machine, the other end in the portion 27. Chucks 30 in a container forming machine, are rotatable about an axis 29. Tubes 21 for feeding to the chucks are mounted in notches in discs 34, 35, rotatable by a motor 33, and are retained by fixed guides 38, 39. When a feeler 41 detects that no further useful length of tube remains in one of the chucks a switch is closed to energize a solenoid 45 to pivot arms 46, 461 to move a tube 21 outwards into line with the chuck. The feeler arm 41 is pivoted at its centre and spring loaded to allow the tube to descend into the chuck. The end of the tube so fed has meanwhile been heated by a flame 50 to open it, while the tube is heated by a flame 51 to maintain the internal pressure.
