Production of thermally insulating and/or transparent multilayer systems comprises applying alternate dielectric and metal layers to a substrate. The dielectric layers are applied by high power impulse sputtering. Independent claims are included for: (A) Multilayer systems as described, in which at least one of the dielectric layers is in the form of a relaxed crystal phase with preferential orientation; and (B) use of the systems in window panes and glazing systems, including car windows.
