The card reading or writing unit has a slot shaped card receiving chamber (6) separated in an inner area (3) with reading or writing connections and an outer area (4) by a movable separating plate (2). The separating plate is arranged in displacing manner to and fro transverse to an insertion direction (E) of the card between a separating position and a writing or reading position. An independent claim is also included for a device with an integrated card reading or writing unit.
