PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus for carrying out distortion correction only when a region identification object region is overlapped with a distortion correction object region in the case of carrying out region identification processing for reading an image from a book original or a stapled sheet bundle or the like. SOLUTION: A region identification means 30 of the image processing apparatus identifies a region of characters, a graphic, or a photo or the like from image information read by an image read means for reading an image of an original, and a distortion region detection means 40 detects a distorted region by using the identified region information. When the distorted region detected by a distortion region detection means 40 includes the region of the characters, the graphic, or the photo or the like, a distortion correction means 50 corrects the distortion of the image information, applies again the region identification processing to the image from which distortion is eliminated to extract the region of the characters, the graphic, or the photo or the like.
