In order to provide a variable gear with a variable velocity ratio, the gear comprises an input 14, an output 16, positive gearing 12 from the input to the output, and a means 18 to vary the velocity ratio between the input and output, the variable gear comprising a first gear member 22 engagable with an engaging gear member 26. The first gear member 22 has movable, separately mounted teeth 28, wherein the movable teeth 28 are such that they are individually rotatable about a pivot and a variable number of the teeth 28 can sit between successive teeth 32 of an engaging gear member 26 or a variable number of teeth of the movable teeth 28 of the first gear member 22 can engage a variable number of teeth 32 of the engaging gear member 26. In each case the gear member can engage the engaging gear member positively with variable velocity ratio. |
