A method and system for investigation, analysis or modeling of a condition of a drive or machine controller, wherein operating data of said drive or machine controller is examined and a computer-implemented process or calculation carried out to determine said condition by means of identifying one said drive or machine controller of a plurality of drives or machine controllers, accessing and retrieving operating data from said drive or machine controller by means of a portable device comprising a memory storage device, uploading the retrieved operating data to a computer or computer network from the portable device, retrieving, by means of the computer or computer network, stored data for the identified said drive or machine controller and determining the said condition of said drive or machine controller.
