A magnetic disk apparatus and a method for controlling a magnetic head are provided to read/record data when data sector moves below a head by calculating a permitted search time based on the position of a magnetic head before movement, the target position of the magnetic head, and the position of a data sector. A magnetic disk apparatus comprises a driving unit, a position error feedback control system(100), and a speed control system. The driving unit moves a magnetic head for recording/reproducing information on a magnetic disk. The position error feedback control system controls the feedback of the driving unit based on the difference between a target track position and a position where the magnetic head is detected. The speed control system changes a target speed curve based on the position of the magnetic head before movement, the targeted track position of the magnetic head, and the position of a data sector for recording/reproducing.
