Undissolved gas in a hydraulic control system contg. a hydraulic medium pressure pump and a feed reservoir, is detected by (a) checking the compressability of the medium; and (b) deducting the amt. of undissolved gas by taking into account that an increase of the amt. of undissolved gas in the medium results in a decrease of the compressibility of the medium. Both the high and low pressure sides of the system are brought to a predetermined first pressure by a separate source of the medium, then the pressure on both sides is brought to a second predetermined higher pressure using the source and the amt. of hydraulic medium fed to the control system from the source is observed, such that the hydraulic medium is drawn from a reservoir provided with a filling-level indicator and the change in the filling level of the reservoir is observed.
