The invention relates to a process using a pulse-width modulated inverter (2) for switching off an electrical machine (1) in the event of a malfunction. Undesirable side effects caused by switching off the electrical machine can be minimised and regular machine operation (Z1) can be maximised if the electrical machine (1) is first switched to a disconnected mode of operation (Z2) in which all switches (3a-3f) of the pulse-width modulated inverter (2) are open, then switched to a short-circuit mode (Z3) in which the switches (3a-3c) connected to the high potential (UBat) are open and the switches (3d-3f) connected to the low potential (ground) are closed.
