An image scanning apparatus includes a body case in the form of a substantially rectangular hollow box, a paper discharge portion and a paper supply portion which are formed in one side of the hollow box and arranged in vertically spaced relation to one another, a scanning unit mounted within the hollow box, and a conveyor unit disposed within the hollow box for feeding a subject document along a feed path. The feed path is defined by the conveyor unit and has a substantially horizontal U shape. The horizontal U-shaped guide path extends such that the subject document, as it is fed by the conveyor unit, is transferred from the paper supply portion to the paper discharge portion via the scanning unit. The image scanning unit having the horizontal U-shaped feed path is compact in size and hence requires only a small space for installation. <IMAGE>
