The invention relates to a process for regulating the pressure in an electrolysis plant, and to an electrolysis plant which produces hydrogen and oxygen. The electrolysis plant produces hydrogen and oxygen by breaking down electrolysis liquid with the aid of an electric current. The plant contains a closed, pressurized electrolysis cell 10 for producing hydrogen and oxygen, a hydrogen line 23, 28 for conducting hydrogen from the electrolysis cell 10 to a hydrogen store 30, an oxygen line 22, 33 for conducting oxygen from the electrolysis cell 10, and feeding members 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 for feeding electrolysis liquid to the electrolysis cell 10. A given pressure difference between the pressure of the oxygen line 3 and the pressure of the hydrogen line 28 is maintained by conducting oxygen, when it is leaving the system, via one or more spring-loaded overflow valves 34, 34a, 34b in such a way that the pressure which pertains in the hydrogen line 28 is conducted to the spring side of the overflow valve 34, 34a, 34b. <IMAGE>
