The invention relates to a device (10) that is intended for automatically controlling the speed of a vehicle and which comprises - a positioning sensor (12), which is designed to emit a position signal (14) with the current position of the vehicle, - a navigation database (16), in which the positions of the city limits are stored, and - a speed control unit (18), to which the position signal (14) is fed and which is configured in such a manner that it determines, as a function of the position signal (14), the distance of the vehicle from the nearest city limits or a region with a speed limit in the direction of travel of the vehicle by means of the data of the navigation database (16) and generates, as a function of the determined distance, a speed setting signal (20), which reduces the current speed of the vehicle in such a manner that a predefined speed of the vehicle is reached no later than at the nearest city limits or the region with a speed limit.
