Disclosed is the use of melatonin in the manufacture of a medicament for the short-term potentiation of the hypnotic effect in a human. The medicament comprises at least one compound selected from the group consisting of non-barbituate and non-benzodiazepine hypnotics which are GABA-A receptor modulators, provided that the medicament includes an amount of melatonin effective for potentiation of the hypnotic effect of at least one compound when administered to a human in an amount which, if administered in the absence of melatonin, would be sub-therapeutic.
