An apparatus for improving brightness and chroma in a display device and a method for performing the same are provided to improve the brightness and chroma respectively by using CIE color coordinates, thereby improving the brightness and chroma so as to be suitable for visual features of a human. A data receiver(102) receives plural first display data. An improving unit(104) obtains CIE factors by performing conversion into CIE(Commission Internationale de I' Eclairage) color coordinates with respect to the first display data received by the data receiver. The improving unit generates second display data by correcting at least one of brightness and chroma with respect to the CIE factors. The improving unit includes a brightness improving unit and a chroma improving unit. A display unit(106) displays images corresponding to the second display data transmitted from the improving unit.
