A photoreceptor device is provided to have a controlled regular morphology so that an incompatible functional material and a binder material can not get into contact with each other in a manner that generates charge trap positions. A photoreceptor device includes a substrate and at least one patterned binder layer comprising a solid binder matrix and hollow spaces filled with a functional material or filler, or a substrate and at least one layer selected from a charge generation layer, a charge transfer layer, and an overcoat layer, wherein the at least one of the charge generation layer, charge transfer layer, and overcoat layer comprises a self-assembled and patterned binder layer.
