An image generating apparatus for generating a 3D image and a method thereof are provided to divide a 2D image necessary for generating the 3D image into plural images, change the size of each of the divided images into an image size supported in a 3D engine, and perform the texture mapping and rendering of the each changed image to generate the 3D image, thereby reducing the distortion of the 2D image. An image generating method for generating a 3D(Three-Dimensional) image comprises the following steps of: checking whether there is a request of a 2D(Two-Dimensional) image or the 3D image through a key input unit(402); checking a number of divided images of which each size is smaller than an image size supported in a 3D image generator and which is the minimum number through an image size analyzer(404); increasing each image size so that the size of the divided images can be the image size supported in the 3D image generator(408); mapping each of images stored in a texture storage unit to a 3D object using a texture mapping method(410); rendering the mapped 3D object to generate a final 3D image(412); and displaying the generated 3D image on a display unit. |
