APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR HIERARCHICAL MOTION ESTIMATION

An apparatus and a method for estimating a hierarchical motion are provided to store all of frames of each hierarchy or store a part of a hierarchy and convert an order of a pixel and an order of a macro block in each hierarchy, thereby significantly reducing load time of a motion estimation area giving heavy effects on speed during hierarchical motion estimation. A reference frame providing unit(201) provides a reference frame of each hierarchy with respect to a reference frame having plural hierarchies. A frame memory unit(203) stores the reference frame of each hierarchy provided from the reference frame providing unit. A motion estimating unit(205) performs hierarchical motion estimation by using an inputted current frame and the reference frame of each hierarchy stored in the frame memory.
