The present disclosure relates to pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine compounds of formula (I), wherein the variables shown in formula (I) are as defined in the specification, processes for their preparation, intermediates usable in these processes, and pharmaceutical compositions containing the compounds. The disclosure also relates to the use of pyrazolopyridine compounds in therapy , for example as inhibitors of phosphodiesterases (PDE), in particular PDE4 inhibitors, and/or for the treatment and/or prophylaxis of inflammatory and/or allergic diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), atopic dermatitis, urticaria, allergic conjunctivitis, vernal conjunctivitis, eosinophilic granuloma, psoriasis, septic shock, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, reperfusion injury of the myocardium and brain, chronic glomerulonephritis, endotoxic shock, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, allergic rhinitis or adult respiratory distress syndrome in a mammal.
