The invention relates to a heat storage material consisting of a relatively temperature-insensitive matrix comprising a substance having open pores and of a heat-sensitive working material which comprises a material which attracts water and is capable of undergoing reversible dehydration/hydration. The intended application of the heat storage material derives from its property as an agent for the cooling and heating of a gaseous medium (air), an agent for the temperature-control and the protection of products and/or constructions against heating, for example components of radioelectronic devices, and as an agent for extinguishing fires.
