A locking mechanism (40) has a lever (44) moved and up down along the vertical slot (48) of a housing (46) and moving the tailgate retainer (20) between open and closed positions. The lever forms a locking pin (52) engaged to a receiving groove (54) on a locking member (42), locking the tailgate retainer in the closed position. The locking pin also engages a detent groove (54) on the slot, locking the retainer in the open position. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a tailgate system; and (2) a tailgate. |
