A mobile terminal having a user authentication function and a user authentication method thereof are provided to increase the reliability of a user authentication function in a simple configuration by recognizing and analyzing the three-dimensional characteristics of a user's face. In case a user tries to use a mobile terminal as the mobile terminal is booted, a control part enters authentication mode and displays a user authentication request message(S12). In this case, the control part activates a camera module. The camera module photographs the user's face and provides the photographed face image to a face recognition data processing part(S14). Also a distance detection sensor detects the distance values of many regions in the user's face and provides the detected values to the face recognition data processing part(S16). The face recognition data processing part extracts the two-dimensional characteristics and three-dimensional characteristics of the user's face based on the photographed image and the detected distance values. The face recognition data processing part provides the extracted data to a user authentication part. The user authentication part compares the extracted data with the previously stored data(S18). If matched, the user authentication part notifies the control part that user authentication has been successfully completed(S20).
