<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To adaptively change the band which eliminates an inter-frame correlation according to the statistic nature of the pictures to improve the coding efficiency without increasing the additional information quantity. <P>SOLUTION: A spatiotemporal adaptive prediction divides the band of an original picture, and eliminates an inter-frame correlation in each band, using a nonlinear predictor. Band prediction processors 11-14 determine the inter-frame correlations by a determining unit 17 in frequency bands lower by one level in the direction of bands LH, HL, HH from a band LL divided by a band divider 10 to the lowest frequency band, utilizing the fact that correlations exist between the bands in the spatially same direction LH, HL, HH from the lowest frequency band; and codes the bands according to the spatiotemporal adaptive prediction or directly code them, if the correlations are high or low, respectively. This includes the coding after dividing the band into small block units, and the determining at a proportion of the inter-frame process to the intra-frame process of the band instead of the inter-frame correlation determining. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p> |
