An aspect of the invention provides an image processing apparatus having a color copy function of reducing a color of a document image to print the document image on a recording medium. The image processing apparatus includes an image generation unit arranged to scan a document to generate image data; a hue determination unit arranged to determine a specific hue included in the image data and a hue becoming a complementary color of the specific hue; a color reduction unit arranged to reduce a color of the image data based on the specific hue and the hue becoming the complementary color of the specific hue; and an output unit arranged to output the image data whose color is reduced by the color reduction unit on a recording medium. The color reduction unit replaces the image data which is of a hue in a predetermined range from the hue becoming the complementary color with the hue becoming the complementary color, and the color reduction unit replaces the image data which is of a hue except for the hue in the predetermined range with the specific hue.
