An apparatus and a method for estimating a camera position are provided to remove an abnormal point from inputted characteristic points before a reference point is detected so as to set an appropriate reference point, thereby calculating an estimation value with respect to the position and posture of a camera such that the estimation value is close to an actual value. An apparatus for estimating camera position includes a data input unit(100), an abnormal point determination unit(200), a reference point determination unit(300), and a camera information processor. The data input unit receives data including a plurality of image coordinates included in image data of a single frame and a plurality of characteristic points respectively represented by the image coordinates. The abnormal point determination unit divides the characteristic points into a first group corresponding to an object to be used to estimate camera position and a second group including abnormal points corresponding to characteristic points other than the characteristic points of the first group. The reference point determination unit detects a reference point close to the center of balance of the characteristic points of the first group and detects reference image coordinates at which the reference point is projected to the image data. The camera information processor generates estimation values with respect to the position and posture of a camera which generates the image data.
