An image capturing apparatus, a light metering method, a luminance calculating method and a program are provided to use different light metering methods for a general photographing mode and a composite photographing mode respectively which are used to accomplish a dynamic range to perform appropriate metering in each mode. An image capturing apparatus includes a processor(4), a detector(6) and a controller(10). The processor selectively performs a general photographing process of obtaining a single exposure image signal in a unit period and processing the exposure image signal to generate photographing image data and a composite photographing process of obtaining a long-term exposure image signal and a short-term exposure image signal and combining the two exposure image signals to generate photographing image data. The detector performs metering on the photographing image data generated by the processor. The controller controls switching between metering methods used by the detector according to the photographing mode used by the processor.
