A method and an apparatus for performing upflow filtration and backwashing in a water treater are provided to improve backwashing efficiency by performing an upflow filtration process during filtration and performing a process of blowing high pressure air from a lower part to an upper part, lifting a filter media in the lower part to the upper part, and dispersing and dropping the filter media during backwashing. A filtration apparatus(100) comprises: an inner pipe(20) and an outer pipe(30) having a double pipe structure vertically installed in a central part of the apparatus; a pump(10) for transferring raw water to the outer pipe through an inflow part(31) of the outer pipe installed in the central part of the apparatus via an influent valve(11) formed on an inflow part at one side of the apparatus; spiral screw type blades(32) installed in the outer pipe to flow raw water to the filter layer through an outflow part(33) on a lower part of the outer pipe; a filter layer(40) in which a filter media(41) selected from activated carbon, sand, zeolite, anthracite, ceramics, and ion exchange resin is embedded; a sludge storage tank(50) installed under the filter layer to collect sludge; a discharge valve(52) for discharging sludge water(50-1) generated in a top part of the filter layer and performing a draining function during the backwashing process; a flat filtration membrane(60) installed in an upper part within the apparatus to discharge filtered water through a filtered water outlet(70); a glass see-through window(42) or a first flange, and a second flange(43); and an air ejection pipe(22) installed in a central part of the inner pipe, and a filter media spray plate(23) installed on an upper part of the inner pipe.
