From the vessel, a free end of the cable or hose is launched on a balloon, and then, with the aid of a gripper device supported by a helicopter or the like, the cable or hose is gripped behind the balloon and is transferred to the other vessel or the quay. A device according to the invention comprises a reel, which can be attached to the deck of the vessel, for a cable or hose and a balloon which is attached to the end of the cable or hose, if appropriate via an auxiliary line.
