A method for forming an electrolytic capacitor includes an anode with an dielectric oxide layer and forming a conductive polymer coating over the anode by polymerizing a monomer in the presence of less than a stoichiometric amount of an oxidative polymerization catalyst. The monomer could be a polypyrroles, polythiophene such as poly 3,4-ethylenedioxy-thiophene, polyanilines, polyacetylenes or combinations thereof. The oxidative catalyst could be any transitional metal salt such as iron(III) toluene-sulphonate. Additionally polar solvents such as aprotic solvents may also be used. The use of less than the stoichiometric amount of the oxidative polymerization catalyst per mole of monomer can slow the polymerization of the monomer, creating oligomers that are shorter in length than if fully polymerized into a polymer. |
