A method of optimising the design of a structural element, e.g. a steel beam for use in a building, wherein an initial design of the structural is inputted then the design is analysed, to calculate the value of a plurality of properties of a structural element with the design that is being analysed, and based on the analysis parameters of the design are selected, by means of a knowledge base, and the values of these parameters are modified; with the analysis and selection and modification of parameters being performed iteratively until the design is optimal. Preferably the design is also checked to ensure it meets predetermined criteria, and the values of the properties are calculated at a plurality of locations on a structural element of the design being analysed. |
