PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video playback apparatus capable of operating a device, in special playback control, in accordance with the type of the special playback control. SOLUTION: A video playback apparatus includes: a means for reading control data from a recording medium storing video data and the control data, the control data indicating a method of controlling operation of a control object device determined for each of a plurality of types of playback control including ordinary playback and special playback; a detection means for detecting the type of requested playback control; a video playback means for playing back the video data on the recording medium in accordance with a playback control method corresponding to the type detected by the detection means; and a device control means for controlling the operation of the control object device in accordance with the operation control method in the control data corresponding to the type of playback control detected by the detection means.
