PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image input/output device which outputs an image without including a bulk memory in an engine unit. SOLUTION: An image input/output device includes a plurality of drum units 210-213 capable of outputting an image of a color such as yellow, magenta and cyan or black-and-white is connected with a plotter, FAX equipment or an image input device by a PCI bus, becomes a bus master as needed, and reads image data into memories that the respective devices include in the required timing of the drums. Furthermore, encoded image data are read from the memory that the plotter, the FAX equipment or the image input device includes, and extended within the image input/output device to output images. Moreover, since a compressor and an extender is included and images can be outputted while being compressed, the memory that the plotter, the FAX equipment or the image input device includes can effectively be used. Moreover, since the time lag is absorbed in the order of compression, a page memory at the side of the engine unit can be eliminated without the need to consider a time lag.
