PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a mobile communication system in which network information is adaptively updated in response to variations of network configuration. SOLUTION: A mobile communication system comprises a plurality of base stations (20-24) and mobile units (40, 41), each of the base stations holding a neighboring cell list constituted of management information on cells in a neighboring relation with a cell that the present base station manages, wherein a base station instructs a mobile unit existing within its own cell to search for a neighboring cell communicable for the mobile unit, the instructed mobile unit searches for the neighboring cell in accordance with instruction contents and redirects a search result containing a cell ID of the detected neighboring cell, and the base station which receives the search result updates the neighboring cell list being held on the basis of the search result.
