PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic tensioner installable at depression angle capable of suppressing the fluttering of a timing chain by sufficiently developing the hydraulic damping force of a plunger during the start of an engine and preventing abnormal noise from occurring even if the tensioner is installed in the engine at a depression angle. SOLUTION: This hydraulic tensioner 100 installable at a depression angle comprises a plunger 120 slidably projecting toward the traveling timing chain C and having a cylindrical hollow part communicating with a plunger storage hole 111; an inner sleeve 130 closely secured to the bottomed part of the plunger storage hole 111, communicating with an oil supply passage 112 opening to the plunger storage hole 111, and partly projecting into the cylindrical hollow part 121 of the plunger 120 in a slidably contact state; a check valve unit 140 closely secured to the projecting end side of the inner sleeve 130 and projecting into the high-pressure chamber R1 of the plunger 120; and a spring 150 for biasing the plunger stored in the high-pressure chamber R1.
