PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a molten metal retaining furnace which can be inexpensively operated compared with a conventional surface combustion burner, facilitates partial replacement or repair, and also has excellent versatility. SOLUTION: In the molten metal retaining furnace, the lower surface side of the upper lid of a molten metal heating chamber 3 has a combustion heating device 7. The combustion heating device 7 has a combustion pipe 8 and a premixed gas supply pipe 9. The combustion pipe 8 is disposed above the molten metal surface M in an opposed state, and gas outlet holes opening downward are lined in the longitudinal direction of the pipe. The premixed gas supply pipe 9 is connected to the upstream end of the combustion pipe 8. The lower part of the peripheral surface of the combustion pipe 8 is fitted with a radiating body 11 made of a heat-resistant metal fiber to cover the gas outlet ports.
