A flash memory based memory system is provided to execute a copyback operation of a flash memory automatically through hardware instead of software to reduce time for which software intervenes in the copyback operation, thereby improving the performance of the memory system. A flash memory based memory system includes a flash memory(100), a CPU(Central Processing Unit)(300), address and control registers(220,230), and a flash controller(200). The address and control registers are set by the CPU when a copyback operation is executed. The flash controller controls the copyback operation of the flash memory in a hardware manner according to information stored in the registers without having intervention of firmware.
