A catalyst deterioration preventing apparatus for catalyst means containing a catalyst component capable of inducing a chemical change of gas by contact, wherein poisoning substance removing means for removing any poisoning substance contained in the gas and adsorbed on the catalyst component or forming a compound with the catalyst component is provided on the primary side of the catalyst means. Further, the poisoning substance removing means and the catalyst means are provided with a spacing therebetween so as to be exchangeable with each other. Alternatively, a body supporting the component capable of adsorbing the poisoning substance ofthe poisoning substance removing means or forming a compound with the poisoning substance and a body supporting the catalyst component of the catalyst means are integrally constituted and disposed so as to be exchangeable with each other. By this apparatus, not only can any performance deterioration of the catalyst means be prevented but also the effect of low pollution can be maintained over a prolonged period of time.
