<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical communication device enabling each terminal to perform signal processing similarly to a conventional metal LAN even on an optical/metal mixed type passive star type network. <P>SOLUTION: An optical communication device sends out a signal to only an optical fiber 7b when there is an input from only an electric wire 8 and to the electric wire 8 and optical fiber 7b when there is an input from only an optical fiber 7a, and holds both an electric output signal and an optical output signal at H when there are input signals from both the electric wire 8 and optical fiber 7a and one of the electric input signal and optical input signal is at H.
