<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately set the position of a pattern while preventing scratch and soil on an image carrier and to improve accuracy in color alignment adjustment. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a detecting means for detecting a toner image and outputting a detection signal, and control means for setting image forming conditions for an image forming means based on the detection signal. In the image forming apparatus, a comparing means compares a first predetermined value with the width of a first pattern formed by the image forming means and detected by a detecting means in the direction of conveyance. If the first predetermined value is smaller than the width, a determining means determines that the first pattern is inclined forward and backward in the direction of conveyance within the width detected in this direction.
