PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a diesel engine for performing multistage injection capable of improving increase in white smoke when the engine is shifted from in a cold condition to a hot condition. SOLUTION: This diesel engine 10 includes a fuel injection device 50 composed of: a fuel feed pump 53 for pumping fuel; a common rail 52 for accumulating the fuel pumped from the fuel feed pump; injectors 51 for injecting fuel into cylinders by electronic control; a cooling water temperature sensor 64 for detecting the temperature of engine cooling water; a fuel injection quantity map for calculating targeted common rail pressure, a total injection quantity, the number of multistage injection quantity, each injection quantity and each injection timing from the output of engine driving condition detection means. Also the diesel engine 10 is provided with: total injection quality increasing means for increasing the total injection quality of the injection control quality computing means; and injection number decrease avoidance means for avoiding changing the number of multistage injection by the total injection quality increasing means when the engine is shifted from in a cool condition to in a hot condition.
