PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique capable of reducing emissions of hydrocarbon (HC) without excessively increasing emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in a control system for a spark ignition type internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: When timing overadvancing treatment for advancing ignition timing of the spark ignition type internal combustion engine before MTB is executed, EGR treatment for introducing EGR gas to inside of a cylinder of the internal combustion engine is also executed. At this time, EGR gas amount is adjusted so that NOx emission amount when the EGR treatment is executed is set smaller than that when the EGR treatment is not executed (when only the timing overadvancing treatment is executed) and so that HC emission amount when the EGR treatment is executed is set smaller than that when the timing overadvancing treatment is not executed (when the EGR treatment is not executed neither). Thus, while increase in NOx emission amount caused by the timing overadvancing treatment is reduced, HC emission amount can be reduced. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
