PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an excellent image by well controlling optical concentration of a light source portion even if a manuscript floats when it is used for an optical system for reduction. SOLUTION: An illumination unit 10 is an apparatus to irradiate light arranging a plurality of pieces of light source portions 13 comprised of a LED to emit the light from an infinitesimal area, at least a direction of the light source 13 around a center of an arrangement of the light source portions 13 of the illumination unit 10 is not vertical to an arrangement direction of the light source portions 13, and the directions of each light source 13 are not the same. Here, the "arrangement direction" is as shown in Fig. 3 the direction to which each light source portion 13 is arranged, and the direction of the light source portion 13 is the direction which is vertical to a light emitting face of the light source portion 13.
