PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of detecting an original size with an inexpensive configuration. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with a placing table for placing an original, an original cover which is openable and closable and presses the original placed on the placing table, an optical sensor for detecting the opening/closing angle of the original cover, and an original size detecting means for making the opening/closing angle of the original cover different and detecting the size of the original placed on the placing table several times. In such a case, the original size detecting means performs the first detection of an original size (S13) when light quantity detected by the light receiving part of the optical sensor becomes smaller than prescribed quantity (Yes in S12), and performs the second detection of the original size (S15) when the light quantity becomes larger than the prescribed quantity (Yes in S14).
