PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more accurately detect a double-talk state and/or echo route variation, to appropriately control the adaptive filter processing of an adaptive filter, and to prevent the degradation of communication quality. SOLUTION: This echo canceler comprises: the adaptive filter for updating an adaptive filter coefficient and generating pseudo echo signals; an echo elimination means for eliminating echo components by subtracting the pseudo echo signals from transmission input signals; a state judgement means for fetching reception output signals and the transmission input signals, judging echo signal characteristics through an echo route on the basis of the signal state of the reception output signals and the transmission input signals, and judging a sate using the judged result; and an adaptive filter control means for controlling the adaptive filter processing of the adaptive filter corresponding to a state judged result by the state judgement means.
