PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission which has forward eight speed steps, and can keep the respective speed changing steps in a good balance. SOLUTION: The automatic transmission comprises a first planetary gear device PG0 in which a ring gear R0 is connected to an input shaft, a second planetary gear drive PG1 in which a carrier C1 is connected to the carrier C0 and a sun gear S1 is connected to the R0, a third planetary gear drive PG2 in which a ring gear R2 is connected to the C1, a fourth planetary gear device PG3 in which a sun gear S3 is connected to the sun gear S2, a first clutch C-1 for selectively connecting the S2 to the input shaft, a second clutch C-2 for selectively connecting the C2 to the input shaft, a first brake B-1 for selectively restricting the rotation of the R0, a second brake B-2 for selectively restricting the rotation of the R2, a third brake B-3 for selectively restricting the rotation of the S0, and a fourth brake B-4 for selectively restricting the rotation of the R3. Further, the automatic transmission comprises a third clutch C-3 for connecting the R0, the S1 to the input shaft or for connecting the R2 to the C1. All of PG0 to PG3 are a single pinion type.
