<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact wind power generation apparatus which rotates a wind turbine under a gentle wind condition so as to improve its appearance. <P>SOLUTION: Under such a wind velocity condition that rotation of the wind turbine is not detected by a rotation sensor 11, a control unit 9 turns a switch means 3 to the a-side and drives a generator 2 as a motor for a short period of time so as to rotate the wind turbine 1. It is determined that the gentle wind is blowing when the wind turbine 1 continues to rotate, and it is judged that there is no wind when the wind turbine 1 immediately stops rotating. In either case, the generator 2 is intermittently driven as a motor for a short period of time so as to assist the rotation of the wind turbine. When it is judged that the gentle wind is blowing, a cycle of intermittency is shortened to increase repetition of rotation of the wind turbine.
