<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an instant messaging system which allows a user to set priority of an active conversational partner. <P>SOLUTION: Disclosed is the instant messaging system 10 that provides a means for presenting information to a user 16 about current conversation partners and for managing the handling of multiple messages from different parties. A priority hierarchy is established and set by a user 16 with respect to each conversation partner. Message from high priority conversation partners are delivered and displayed 26 prior to messages from lower priority conversation partners.
