PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an array substrate using an alkali glass substrate capable of preventing deterioration of the characteristics of a switching element and enhancing surface pushing strength, and to provide a liquid crystal device using the array substrate. SOLUTION: The TFD array substrate to be a constituent element of the liquid crystal device includes a first alkali tempered glass substrate and a TFD element. In the first alkali tempered glass substrate, a compression stress layer is formed on the surface of a glass base material (tensile stress layer) by an ion-exchange method. Thereby, strength of the first alkali tempered glass substrate is enhanced. The TFD element is a switching element strong to contamination of an alkali component and formed on the compression stress layer. As a result, deterioration in characteristics of the TFD element can be prevented and surface pushing strength (pressurization strength) of the TFD array substrate can be enhanced. When the TFD array substrate is applied to the liquid crystal device, the liquid crystal device whose liquid crystal display panel is less likely to break, even when pressurization force is applied to a display panel surface can be formed.
