PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately adjust the focus of a photographic lens, irrespective of the position of a face. SOLUTION: In response to the half-depression of a shutter button, a face extracting circuit starts extracting a facial area from an image. In response to the detection of the facial area, a CPU drives a stepping motor via a motor drive, orients the auxiliary light-emitting direction of an LED toward the face of a subject, and emits auxiliary light from the LED via an LED driver. The auxiliary light is emitted to the face of the subject and enhances the contrast between the facial area and its periphery. An AF detection circuit performs focus control on the facial area, as a focus evaluation area, in which the contrast to the periphery is enhanced, and thereby determines the focusing position of a focus lens. Based on the focusing position determined by the AF detection circuit, the CPU drives a focusing lens motor via a motor driver, thereby moving the focus lens to the focusing position and adjusting the focus.
